Spending the school holidays in London – what to see and where to go

A vibrant city, full of culture, there’s so much to see and do in London, so we’ve selected some of our favourite family-friendly open-air events and spectacles for your entertainment this summer.

Summer by the River

London Bridge City, the stretch of the South Bank between London Bridge and Tower Bridge plays host once again to open-air gigs, theatre shows, film screenings, bingo and karaoke nights, with a pop-up bar and restaurant too. This year we celebrate summer with a 1930’s theme.

Find out all about it on the website: Summer by The River

Summer Screens

Just around the corner from The Ivy in the Park, and Plateau Restaurant, Bar and Grill is Summer Screens at Canada Square Park & Union Square. They’re showing Wimbledon, Test Cricket matches and family films throughout July and August.

Check the showings on the Canary Wharf website.

Canary Wharf’s Celebration of Natural Light

You can easily make a whole day of culture out of Canary Wharf this summer, by visiting some or all of the 17 installations of art pieces that celebrate natural light, plus a wonderful display of blown glass at One Canada Square.

Discover the full list of installations and download the map on the official Summer Lights website.

The Globe Theatre

The epitome of culture in London, The Globe has regular showings of Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar, Henry VII and King Lear throughout summer 2022.

The ‘O’ shaped roof allows outdoor enjoyment of some of England’s most beloved plays, with standing room for around 700 ‘groundlings’, although there are some seats available.

Keep an eye on Shakespeare’s Globe for up-to-date show times.

Regents Park’s Open Air Theatre

Tiered seating full of people watching performers on an open air stage in the park

If Shakespeare isn’t your cup of tea, the Inner Circle of Regents Park is hosting family plays such as 101 Dalmatians, or kick it up a notch with Greek play, Antigone.

They say the thrill of open-air theatre in London is the wonderfully unpredictable nature of the weather! So keep an eye on the play timetable and try to plan accordingly: Open Air Theatre

Notting Hill Carnival

Women wearing colourful and flamboyant, Brazilian style carnival costumes.

For thrilling vibrancy and Mas, Soca and Calypso vibes, get to Notting Hill Carnival as it returns to the streets following a 2-year interlude. Crowds and music will fill the streets of West London alongside a splendid mix of Caribbean food and drink.
