Badminton is famous for two sports, and whilst they are both undeniably demanding, one can get considerably wetter than the other!
The Badminton Horse Trials have been held at the country estate of the Dukes of Beaufort in Gloucestershire since 1949, when the 10th Duke of Beaufort conceived of the competition in order that British riders could train for future international events.
The trials, as the estate itself, have gone through many changes over the decades, and once weren’t even held at Badminton, moving to Windsor at the invitation of the Queen, to hold the 2nd European Championships.
Today, the trials are a fully international event, encompassing dressage, show jumping and cross country, as well as some displays of impressive horses and hound parades.

Visiting the Badminton horse trials
For visitors attending the trials from a distance there are two options for overnight accommodation at the estate.
Camping, which allows for caravans, motorhomes, tents and live-in horseboxes, and glamping.
The glamping site is called The Retreat and boasts a truly luxurious experience in an exclusive private site, located right in the heart of the estate, and right in the centre of the action adjacent to the cross-country course at Huntsmans Close.
Choose from deluxe ensuite safari tents, bell tents or tent houses, are all furnished to the highest of standards, with some even containing up to four bedrooms.
